The Shadows (Jazz)
(Raf Nazario, vocals & keyboards)
Music & Lyrics by Rafael A. Nazario
I once worked in 'Old Town" in Portland... lots of homeless folks on the streets--one is too man-...but there they were and no doubt still are... usually looking for refuge inside a bar.
The "Half moon faces " was an image that stayed with me as I made my way up Couch Street and passed a bar on the corner.
LYRICS:
In the dark of a corner
sits a man unencumbered
story goes that his love went away
so he took to the shadows
lost his mind, kept the bottle
drowns the thirst of his passion
with his wine
He toasts the memory
of his sweet sorrow
and tomorrow may as well
not arrive
but the shadows give him the shelter
the rest of the world
would deny
morning comes
on the sidewalk
footsteps sound like the thunder
and the sunlight explodes
in his eyes
so he runs to the shadows
of the bar on the corner
…half moon faces that smile
from the dark
and those faces
drink to his sorrow
tomorrow may as well not arrive
but the shadows give him the shelter
the rest of the world
would deny
now his drink is his pasion
his thirst is his treasure
throat that burns with the pleasure
of his wine
midnight staggers around him
with its lingering faces
fills the dark empty spaces
of his mind
...and those faces
drink to his sorrow
tomorrow may as well not arrive
but the shadows give him the shelter
the rest of the world
would deny
